How SomaGiri Utilises Plant Medicine and Somatic Work

At SomaGiri Journey Centre, plant medicine and somatic work are combined to support deep and lasting change. The focus is not only on the mind, but on the body, where many patterns of stress, trauma and behaviour are held.

Why the Body and Not Only the Mind

Most of us try to think our way out of what troubles us. We look for the explanation, the origin, the reason. Understanding matters, but understanding alone rarely changes how the body responds when something touches an old wound.

The body keeps its own record. Chronic tension, shallow breathing, a startle that arrives before any thought, the sense of bracing for something that is no longer happening - these are not failures of willpower. They are patterns the nervous system learned in order to keep you safe, and they live below the reach of language.

This is why the two are combined. Plant medicine loosens the grip of the thinking mind. Somatic work gives the body a way to speak, and a way to complete what it has been holding.

Plant Medicine

Plant medicine is used to gently open access to what lies beneath the surface. It helps soften mental defences so that emotions, memories and physical sensations can come into awareness more clearly. The medicine is not the solution, but a tool that allows deeper layers to be seen.

Somatic Work

Somatic work provides the structure for this process. Clients are guided to stay connected to their body through breath, sensation and awareness. Instead of analysing the experience, the focus is on noticing what is happening in the body and allowing it to unfold. This helps the nervous system process safely and reduces overwhelm.

Preparation

Preparation is an important step. Before the journey, clients follow simple guidelines to support the body and clarify intention. This creates a stable foundation for the work.

Intention is not the same as expectation. An intention is an honest question - something you are willing to look at. An expectation is a result you have already decided on, and it tends to narrow what the process is able to show you. Much of the preparation conversation is simply the work of telling the difference between the two.

There is also a practical side. Rest, simple food and a quiet few days beforehand all make a difference, as does arranging your life so that you are not walking straight from the session back into a demanding week.

During the Session

During the session, the space is calm, quiet and carefully held. The facilitator ensures safety and offers gentle guidance when needed. As the medicine takes effect, physical sensations and emotions may arise. These are not pushed away, but allowed to move naturally through awareness, breath and stillness.

The pace of the process is important. Nothing is forced. The body leads, which allows change to happen in a way that can be integrated more easily.

Integration

Integration is where the work becomes real. After the session, clients are supported in understanding what emerged and how it applies to their life. Follow-up conversations help turn insight into practical change.

Integration is also slower than most people expect. The insight often arrives in a moment; living differently because of it takes months. Some of that work is quiet and unremarkable - noticing a familiar reaction as it begins, and choosing once, then again, then again, to respond in a new way.

What This Work Asks

This is not a shortcut, and it is not a treatment applied to a passive recipient. It asks for honesty, a willingness to feel what has been avoided, and the patience to let change happen at the pace the body will accept rather than the pace the mind would prefer.

It also asks for support. Where deeper family or ancestral patterns surface, this work sits alongside Family Constellation Therapy rather than replacing it, and people often move between the two over time.

At SomaGiri, plant medicine opens the door, somatic work guides the process and integration anchors the results. The aim is to support a more natural sense of presence, ease and connection in daily life.
